Thanks to NME’s 100 Essential New Artists for 2019 list for helping me discover this band. Immediately when I heard “All I Want To Hear You Say” by Sea Girls, I was hooked.
Don’t be misled by the band name, Sea Girls is in fact a group of four guys haling from London and creating some serious buzz. In addition to their recognition from NME and other publications, they’ve also been nominated for BBC Sound of 2019.
They’ve released a couple EPs featuring numerous infectious singles, but “All I Want To Hear You Say” was the song that first caught my attention and signed me on as an instant fan.
The lyrics tell a story of a guy and girl who broke up a while ago. The girl, who might’ve been a bit out of his league, has moved on with her life, but the guy, a Manchester musician, is still struggling to get over her. He’s can’t get her out of his mind and is hoping that a part of her still loves him.
Sonically this song is a catchy as it gets. The verse tells a clear story and explodes into a chorus that I only image get the crowd jumping when the band plays this live. It reminds me of the Killers during their early Hot Fuss era, with a fast tempo, uplifting synth, and powerful vocals.
Trust me, give this song a play and crank it up to 11. You won’t be disappointed. Their other releases are just as good and I can’t wait for them to release a full-length album and go on a US tour.
